Black Cherry Almond Smoothie

Light and refreshing, this black cherry almond smoothie is the perfect snack to fill AND soothe your tummy after all that heavy holiday eating.

 I don’t know about you, but after the food fest that is Thanksgiving week around here, I always feel the need for a bit of a detox. Nothing too wild and crazy, but a few days of clean eating always helps me feel better after my sodium and sugar overload! The day of, I’m always positive that I’ll never eat again but sure enough, the next morning I’m in need of nourishment. Enter my super easy, tummy soothing smoothie. Such a simple recipe with very basic ingredients, I really think you’ll love it. Let’s do a quick breakdown of why it’s so healthy.
 Plain Greek Yogurt– 23 grams of protein per cup, it’s super filling, low in sugar, and is loaded with good for you probiotics.
 Black Cherries– The list of benefits is ridiculously long. These sweet beauties are packed full of antioxidants, fiber, vitamin C and even have anti inflammatory properties.
 Flax– Loaded with fiber and omega-3s, just 2 tablespoons does the trick.

 Almonds– Full of healthy fats, protein, magnesium and vitamin E, almonds have even been shown to aid in weight loss.

I used skim milk in this smoothie but if milk doesn’t agree with you, cashew, almond, or even rice milk is great. I also used to stevia to sweeten it up a little bit but again, if you’re not a fan, honey, agave nectar, or any sweetener of your choice is fine.  This recipe makes smoothies for 2, but could easily be doubled or tripled to make enough for the whole family. Black Cherry Almond Smoothie

  • Yield: 2 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 cup plain nonfat greek yogurt
  • 1 1/2 cups frozen black cherries, no sugar added
  • 3/4 cup fat free milk
  • 2 tablespoons milled flaxseed
  • 2 tablespoons sliced almonds
  • 2 single serve packets stevia
  • 2-3 drops almond extract

Instructions

  1. Using a table top blender, add yogurt, cherries, and milk and blend until smooth.

  2. Add flaxseed, almonds, sweetener, and extract and blend well.

  3. Serve immediately.
