Lean Buffalo Style Meatballs

Lean ground turkey, sautéed peppers and onions, and creamy feta cheese bake together in a perfectly sized, buffalo wing sauce smothered meatball. This is basically the meatball to end all meatballs. Bonus: it’s ultra healthy!!!

Starting with 93% lean ground turkey was a no brainer in the “how do I make this healthy” thought process. The issue that I run into at times with such lean meat though, is moisture. No one likes a dry meatball! Incorporating sautéed veggies into the mix provided not only a beautiful array of color and flavor but also that extra bit of moisture.

 Throw in some breadcrumbs, flax, and eggs to hold in all together. A few extra spices, scoop of gorgeous feta and bit of my favorite wing sauce and you’ve got yourself something amazing in the oven, filling your kitchen with savory goodness.

Now, for the buffalo wing sauce. I used Sweet Baby Rays Buffalo Wing Sauce and Glaze. The flavor, the consistency, the spice…. Yum yum yum. Incredibly easy to throw together, these meatballs make for a great lunch or quick weeknight dinner. If I’m eating these for lunch, I usually have them with a handful of raw celery and carrots. The 6 grams of protein per meatball really fills me up and keeps me going! If I’m serving them for dinner though, I might serve them with rice, a garden salad, or garlic bread. Lean Buffalo Style Meatballs

  • Yield: 21 meatballs
  • Prep Time: 25 minutes
  • Cook Time: 18 minutes


  • 1/2 bell pepper, diced (I used 1/4 red and 1/4 orange bell pepper)
  • 1/2 small red onion, diced
  • 1/2 teaspoon coarsely ground garlic salt
  • 19.2 ounce 93% lean turkey (1lb is fine)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 large egg white
  • 1/4 cup Italian breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoon milled golden flaxseed
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon diced crushed red pepper
  • 1/2 cup crumbled feta
  • 1/2 cup favorite buffalo wing sauce (I used Sweet Baby Rays Buffalo Wing Sauce and Glaze)


  1. Preheat oven 350

  2. In a small, lightly greased saucepan, begin sautéing diced peppers, onions, and 1/4 teaspoon salt on a medium heat.

  3. Keep covered, stirring occasionally until peppers and onions are soft. Set aside.

  4. In a medium mixing bowl, combine ground turkey, eggs, breadcrumbs, flax, and seasonings and mix well.

  5. Stir in sautéed vegetables and feta.

  6. Roll into small balls using approximately 2 tablespoons of meat and set on a foil lined, greased baking sheet.

  7. Gently brush with buffalo sauce.

  8. Bake on center rack for 15 minutes.

  9. Remove from oven and brush with another coat of buffalo sauce.

  10. Bake another 3 minutes.
