Guiltless Banana Nutella Swirl Muffins

Do your eyes deceive you? No, its true!!!!!! A light and whole grain banana muffin meets the rich decadent swirls of chocolate and hazelnut, all for 160 calories.


Now THAT I will roll out of bed for at 5am…. (of course the little dancing bodies bouncing on my bed help as well….did no one get the memo? Mommies are nicer mommies when they have SLEEP!!! NO? Well at least I have these little beauties to comfort my sleepless soul….



oh wait I meant these 😉


Seriously though, you can be eating these in 30min, start to finish….all warm and gooey….I could almost call these cupcakes but then I would feel weird eating them for breakfast, so muffins it is!

Guiltless Banana Nutella Swirl Muffins

  • Yield: 17 muffins
  • Prep Time: 15 minutes
  • Cook Time: 18 minutes


  • 1 cup white whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3 medium overripe bananas (mashed)
  • 2 tablespoon melted butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup plain nonfat yogurt
  • 1/4 cup 2% milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup Nutella (or any chocolate hazelnut spread)


  1. Preheat oven to 350F

  2. Combine flours, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon in a medium sized mixing bowl.

  3.  In a separate bowl, mash the bananas (It's very important that the bananas are extremely ripe.The riper your bananas, the sweeter the muffins will be).

  4.  Add the melted butter, sugar, yogurt, milk, and egg to the mashed banana and mix well.

  5. Pour the wet banana mixture into the dry ingredients and GENTLY stir. Do not over mix or your muffins will be dense and chewy.

  6.  Now for the best part... get out a small glass and put a small zip bag in it.

  7. Spoon 1/2 cup Nutella into it. This is by far the easiest and cleanest way to do this. Squeeze out the extra air and zip the bag. Snip a tiny corner off the bottom. In the words of my 3 year old "I'm ready for action!"

  8.  Get out your lined muffins pan and spoon about a tablespoon of muffin batter into each liner.

  9. Squeeze about a teaspoon of Nutella on top of this first layer. This will make for a lovely creamy center in each muffin.

  10.  Taking the remainder muffin batter, fill the rest of the muffin cups. (I got 17 muffins out of this)

  11. Using up the rest of the Nutella, squeeze a bit on the top of each muffin, then take a toothpick and make those pretty little swirls.

  12. Bake for appx 18min. Do not over bake!!!


Makes 17 muffins
